Fotograf a pedagog.
Štreitovy fotografie jsou ve sbírkách Muzea moderního umění v New Yorku, Victoria & Albert Museum v Londýně, Národní galerie umění ve Washingtonu, Muzea fotografie v Tokiu a dalších věhlasných institucí. Tvorbu představil na více než 1200 samostatných výstavách a zúčastnil se celé řady skupinových výstav doma i v zahraničí.
Narodil se ve Vsetíně jako nejstarší z pěti dětí. Na rodiče a na dětství ve Stříteži nad Bečvou vzpomíná „navzdory velkým materiálním a společenských problémům“ jako na harmonické období.
Svůj první fotoaparát si pořídil v 60. letech jako student výtvarné výchovy na Pedagogické fakultě Univerzity Palackého. Na Škole výtvarné fotografie v Brně dokončil studium souborem fotografií ze zákulisí olomouckého divadla. Později proslul svými syrovými a přitom hluboce lidskými fotografiemi z venkovského života v malé vesnici Sovinci a jejím okolí, které vznikaly od konce 70. let.
Stará škola na Sovinci, kde manželé Štreitovi bydlí, se za normalizace stala útočištěm pro neoficiální umělce z celé republiky. Štreit organizoval neformální výstavy, koncerty, divadelní představení. V 80. letech jej zatkla tajná bezpečnost. Archiv jeho fotografií, negativů, dokonce i fotoaparát zabavila STB s odůvodněním, že tak chce zamezit páchání další trestné činnosti. Po návratu z vězení mohl být zaměstnán jen v dělnických profesích. Rok pracoval v knihovně, pak jako dispečer státního statku Ryžoviště. O to víc se věnoval kulturní činnosti a fotografování.
Po sametové revoluci v roce 1990 se ve Spojených státech se účastnil putovní fotografické přehlídky ke 150. výročí vynálezu fotografie. Šest jeho snímků do svých sbírek zařadilo Muzeum moderního umění v New Yorku. Režisér Jan Špáta natočil o Štreitovi film Mezi světlem a tmou. Jako externí pedagog vyučoval až do roku 2003 na FAMU v Praze. Zároveň učil dokumentární fotografii na Institutu tvůrčí fotografie FPF Slezské univerzity v Opavě, kde působí dosud.
Je nositelem Cena Olomouckého kraje za přínos v oblasti kultury (2008) a získal i titul Osobnost české fotografie 2007. V roce 2014 mu Vysoká škola výtvarných umění v Bratislavě udělila čestný doktorát.
